Dreams Interpretation

Interpreting Dreams And Dream Language

When a dream is not literal then there is a need for interpretation. To understand interpretation you must understand that God uses symbols in dreams. God has always used pictures to speak to his people. Amos 7:8 And the Lord said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord explains to Amos what it means. I'm sure that Joseph and Daniel looked at the symbols in the dreams and asked God "what does this mean?" and God showed them.

Each time a new dream symbol shows up in my dreams, I ask myself all kinds of questions about it. For example, an eighteen wheeler. I had no idea what God was trying to say to me the first time I dreamed about an eighteen wheeler. So I started asking myself, "What does an eighteen wheeler do?" It travels from state to state carrying needed food and supplies. A traveling ministry would travel from state to state carrying needed spiritual food and supplies, therefore when I dream about eighteen wheelers I know God is talking to me about my traveling ministry.

Over a period of time I accumulated a list of symbols that God had used in my dreams. It is like developing a dream language. A donkey usually represents stubbornness to me. A train represents a powerful move of God to me. Train tracks represent preparation for a powerful move of God. Of course this is "my" dream language. To someone else, a train could represent grief and sorrow because they had lost a loved one in a train wreck. Train tracks could represent adventure because as a child they loved walking the train tracks and looking for treasures.

No book on dream symbols can give you the interpretation because the dream is designed by God to speak to you. The symbols in the dream may mean different things to different people. The book may help but it cannot be your key to interpretation because God is talking to you and He will use symbols that mean certain things to you. God gives the interpretation, but you must ask yourself what does that symbol mean to me.

Look For Biblical Reference

As you are praying about the meaning of the symbols in your dream, look for Biblical references.

In a dream, I was walking north along my mother's property. I remembered a verse in the Bible about the city of God being on the sides of the north .31 Therefore, when I am heading north in a dream I am going toward God.

The Bible refers to our righteousness as filthy rags.32 Therefore if I have a dream where I am wearing rags, I conclude that God is showing me that I am in self effort and works.

Because we are told in the Bible,33 to "shod our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace," anytime I am barefooted in a dream I know God is telling me I am not prepared.

God Gives the Dream Interpretation

Joseph understood that if God gave a dream then He intended for it to be interpreted and Joseph had faith that God would reveal the interpretation to him.

Genesis 40:8. "And they (the butler and baker) said to Joseph, "We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it." So Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please."

In my estimation, 98 percent of all dreams are symbolic and need interpretation. Rarely are dreams literal. Sometimes when it is a dream about someone we know, we assume the dream is for them. Rarely are dreams about the people who are in your dream. They are only in the dream to represent something.
